Bill Proposes Renaming Nashville's Airport to Trump International Airport

Posted

A Tennessee bill advancing through the legislative session this year is seeking to rename Nashville International Airport to Trump International Airport.

The bill, HB217, was filed by Tennessee Representative Todd Warner, but as of yet there are no Senate sponsors for the bill. If the bill is passed through this year’s session, the name change would take effect January 1, 2026. The bill also states that that the airport would be able to continue conducting business under its current name as long as it designates doing business as Trump International Airport.

The bill comes after Nashville regained control over the airport authority board in 2023 after a legal battle ensued with the state. This gave the state authority to appoint ix of the board’s eight members. The Nashville chancery court blocked it, citing that it violated a Home Rule amendment barring TN legislature from passing bills which apply to only one county. While the state appealed in November of 2024, there has not been a ruling issued by the Court of Appeals.

There is also a separate bill, SB214, which was filed by Senator Todd Gardenhire, which proposes barring entities from naming public facilities after public officials while they are still in office until two years after they have left office and the bill also seeks to bar facilities from even being named after individuals who are convicted of a felony.

Tennessee has a Republican-majority legislature, holding a 75-24 majority, meaning that it could help move forward the bill’s passage even with one Republican Senator introducing a bill that could lead to the bill’s failure.
