A new transportation service for people age 60 and older is set to start operations in Crockett County in early November.

MyRide Northwest Tennessee is a subscription service that will operate with private vehicles driven by volunteers to carry older residents in Crockett County from their homes to stores, businesses, doctor’s appointments and other locations.

Jeana Mills, MyRide Coordinator and Options Counselor Supervisor at the Northwest Tennessee Development District office in Martin, is spearheading the MyRide program in this region.

“I want to inform everyone that we are set to kick off MyRide for Crockett County,” said Mills. “MyRide Northwest Tennessee currently serves Gibson County area and is pleased to begin the volunteer transportation program in Crockett County.”

After the launch, MyRide will officially be ready to provide rides to the public.

People interested in volunteering are urged to call the MyRide office. To qualify to be a volunteer you must have a clean driving record, be over the age of 21, use a clean reliable vehicle, have full coverage insurance, take a two-hour training course and be able to pass a seven-point background check. MyRide will provide secondary insurance and can reimburse for travel. All volunteers have to do is give one ride a month around the volunteers’ schedule.

To qualify for Northwest Tennessee MyRide as a rider you must be at least 60 years old, mobile or with the use of a cane, rollator, walker and live in Crockett County.

Rides with the service can travel within a 60-mile radius of the client’s home. Rides can travel into other counties like Madison County if needed, but only for doctor’s appointments.

The cost to receive the service is a $25 fee for a one-year membership, which includes three, “free” rides. After that, rides are $2 per round trip ride and $1 for extra stops. All fees and rides are booked ahead of time, in advance and not on the day of the ride.
