On February 16th, four students from Crockett County represented their school and community at the African American Youth Leadership Summit. The summit, which was hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin, the United Way, TN College of Applied Technology and Blue Oval, brought together representatives from local communities, colleges and businesses.
The event was an opportunity for the four students from Crockett County—Darius, Harmony, Lanyah and Travis—to engage with and learn from leaders and experts in their respective fields. It was also a reminder to them and their fellow Cavmates that true leadership starts with believing in oneself.
At the summit, the students took part in a range of activities designed to help them develop and practice their leadership skills. These included interactive workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities with representatives from various organizations.
The summit also provided a platform for the students to learn more about African American history and the importance of the civil rights movement. Speakers highlighted the legacy of African American leaders and activists, from Frederick Douglass to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and discussed how their legacy and example continue to inspire and motivate people today.
The four students from Crockett County left the summit with a greater understanding of the importance of leadership and a renewed sense of motivation to make a positive impact in their community. As they take the next step in their journey, they will carry with them the knowledge, skills and inspiration they gained from the African American Youth Leadership Summit.
These four students are a reminder to us all that, with a bit of ambition and self-belief, anyone can be a leader. They have shown that, no matter what our background, we are capable of leaving a lasting mark on our community and the world. Generations before us have showed us it can be done—now it’s our turn to take up the mantle and make a difference.
