Common Misconceptions About Pregnancy Stretch Marks

Pregnancy is a beautiful but exhausting journey with unique challenges and milestones in tow. Many people enter pregnancy with a preexisting notion that they will automatically receive stretch marks. Read on to explore the most common misconceptions about pregnancy stretch marks, including the fact that not every pregnancy will involve this change.

Stretch Marks Go Away on Their Own

Many think that because the stretch marks appeared suddenly during pregnancy or postpartum, they will fade or disappear as these chapters close. Unfortunately, once the stretch marks arrive, they are here almost indefinitely. While you can apply a topical solution such as an ultra-hydrating moisturizer or skin salve to reduce their appearance, the stretch marks will never disappear entirely.

Pregnancy Causes Stretch Marks

It seems like pregnancy and stretch marks go hand in hand. The growing belly expands rapidly in a short amount of time. But pregnancy itself does not always cause stretch marks. Stretch marks are also genetic, meaning if your mother or your mother’s mother had them, you might also develop them at some point in life. Pregnancy might just be a catalyst rather than the cause.

Stretch Marks Come From Weight Gain

The misconception that pregnancy causes stretch marks is common; many also believe weight gain can cause them. Rapid growth in a short amount of time can indeed stretch the skin faster than elastin can handle. But gaining weight alone is not the cause of stretch marks. As we mentioned above, genetics play a role. Additionally, rapid weight loss can also affect the skin’s elasticity.

You Cannot Prevent Stretch Marks

Because of genetic dispositions, stretch marks are not entirely preventable. But various lifestyle factors come into play for each individual that can reduce the appearance of existing markings and lower the chances of new scars appearing. Many pregnant persons find success in preventing stretch marks by increasing their hydration habits and being strict about topical moisturizers. Moisture helps the skin’s elastin handle growth with increased ease and offers preventative properties.

Insurance Providers Cover Treatment Plans

It would be a dream for many for their health insurance provider to cover all bodily needs. Unfortunately, few insurance companies assist with nonessential cosmetic procedures and treatments. While you can visit your local medical spa for microdermabrasion or laser peels to combat stretch marks, your insurance provider will not cover these treatments.

Remember, whether you develop stretch marks or not, your journey is remarkable and respectable. Hydrate your mind, body, and baby, and give your skin permission to move as needed.
