4 of the Best Pastimes for New Retirees

Are you a new retiree that’s overwhelmed by your newfound free time? If you’re looking for a new hobby to fill your hours, consider these four pastimes for retirees.

Paddle Boarding

If you live near the ocean or a lake, why not give paddle boarding a go? Paddle boarding is a bit like surfing but less intense. You stand, sit, or lie down on a paddle board and use your arms or paddles to glide across the water.

Avid fishermen will be pleased to hear that you can even fish off a paddle board. Because paddle boards are on the larger side, you can fit your bait box and other equipment on the board. Another perk of the large board is that pet lovers can bring their dogs along for the ride!

Gardening

Gardening is hard work, but it’s also rewarding. Gardening will give you something to occupy yourself during three out of four seasons a year, or all four if you choose to garden indoors during the winter. You get to choose how big your garden is, what you grow, and how much you grow! Once your plants are fully grown, you’ll feel a surge of pride knowing your hard work allowed them to thrive. If you planted flowers, you can look forward to a beautiful garden, and if you grew herbs, veggies, and fruits, you can pick them to use in your own cooking, give to others, or donate to soup kitchens or zoos.

Cooking

Who doesn’t love a tasty, homecooked meal? Whether you’re a beginner, amateur, or pro at this skill, there’s no better time to hone it than in retirement. Practicing your cooking and baking has plenty of perks. For one, you’ll get to eat amazing meals every day rather than relying on take-out or TV dinners, which is more enjoyable and better for your health. Your creations can also bring joy to others. Your kids, grandkids, friends, and neighbors will love to try whatever new treat you whip up!

Bicycling

Bicycling is a low-impact exercise that’s ideal for retirees. It will work your core, arms, legs, and heart without putting excessive strain on your body. Bicycling is also a fun and scenic way to get around the neighborhood. Bike to a friend’s home, to the local nature preserve, or even to the grocery store. And since bicycling is a social sport, you can invite your friends and family to go on a biking adventure with you!

If you’re looking for a way to spend your free time in retirement, give one of these four pastimes for retirees a try! Even if they end up not being your thing, you can say you tried something new and interesting.
